More Than a Pose: Every Senior Deserves to Feel Like Themselves

I have something important to say to you that comes from the depths of my soul.

Every single one of the seniors that approached me at Pueblo Riverwalk, Garden of the Gods, or any other spot in Southern Colorado and said “Sorry, I’m so awkward” went home with a gallery that made their eyes water with happiness.

Every. Single. One.

The thing is, this is what I’ve learned after working with countless seniors throughout Colorado Springs, Pueblo, and Cañon City. Your biggest worries? They’re almost always what makes your pictures come alive. And there’s nothing more stunning than authenticity.

Posing Doesn’t Have To Be A One-Size-Fits-All Thing

I refuse to give you clichéd, formulaic poses because they never look natural, and quite frankly, they never feel good either. Instead, I observe. I notice how the light interacts with your unique body, and then I craft the rest accordingly.

In the case of my tall seniors, including basketball players and volleyball athletes like those from Doherty or Pueblo South, we focus on breaking down the vertical lines.

A relaxed posture leaning against a wall. A seated posture at the top step of Union Avenue. Some way of presenting yourself that is powerful and relaxed, rather than rigidly attentive.

When it comes to my curved seniors, all it takes is finding the right angles. Angles of your arms. Angles of your legs. Finding the right angle for your senior portraits based on the beautiful landscape that accentuates every body type.

The Glasses, Braces, and More That Are Making You Anxious

Do me a favor and don’t waste your time Googling. Yes, you can keep your glasses on. No, I am not going to digitally edit your braces off.

Glasses go with your face. Glasses tell a piece of your story. For years, I have perfected what I call the tilt — a slight movement of the camera lens or of your chin that gets rid of the glare and yet keeps the glasses that frame your everyday face.

And now to those of you worried about your braces. I once had a senior from Air Academy last fall who feared that her braces were going to ruin every photo shoot we would do together. So, we spent the whole photo shoot giggling.

And guess what? When you’re really laughing, no one will ever notice the braces. All they’ll see is your happiness. It’s what filled up her gallery.

Those small details you’re concerned about aren’t issues I have to solve for you. They’re simply who you are today, in this season of your life. And that’s worth preserving.

How to Capture Your True Expression

I don’t just instruct you to smile and shoot.

That gives me your expression when I tell you to smile. We all know what that looks like.

Instead, I talk to you. I ask you questions. “What’s the very first thing you’re going to do the day after you graduate?” And in that fraction of a second, you react. Your eyes light up with excitement and I take my shot. This is the essence of senior portrait posing. It shouldn’t be about smiling, but conversing.

It’s all about getting you to forget that you’re being photographed because the moment that happens, everything else follows.

This Is For All Types Of Seniors

Sports stars and thespians. Gamers and class officers. The extrovert and the introvert who nearly didn’t book because it all seemed too much.

All of you deserve to be in front of my lens.

If we’re shooting in the gritty urban landscape of downtown Pueblo, the endless fields surrounding Falcon, or the trails winding through Garden of the Gods — it doesn’t matter. What matters is that every time we shoot, I aim to have you open your gallery to find yourself how the people who adore you see you.

Confident. Stunning. Your breathtakingly perfect self.
