Surprise Proposal

Surprise Proposal: He Planned Everything. She Had No Idea.

There are some sessions I will never forget. This is one of them.

Austin reached out to me from Texas a few months before he and his girlfriend Holly were planning a trip to Colorado. This guy had one goal. Propose to her at the Royal Gorge Bridge and make sure she never saw it coming.

What followed was honestly one of the most fun planning experiences I’ve ever been part of.

The Setup

Austin and I spent months putting this together. We needed a cover story that was believable enough that Holly would not suspect a thing. So we built a whole setup.

We created a fake email that looked like she had won a photography session through the Royal Gorge Route Railroad, a trip they had already booked together. The email had all the details. The time. The location. The instructions. It looked completely legitimate and genuine.

She had no idea it came from her soon-to-be fiancé.

Surprise Proposal

The Week Of

The week before their trip, Austin and I confirmed every detail. We talked through timing, positioning, and the exact phrases we would use as cues so I would know when he was about to get down on one knee.

When the moment came at the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park, everything fell into place. The words were said. The ring came out. She said yes.

And I was already there. My Camera ready. Capturing every wonderful second of it.

Surprise Proposal

The Best Part Nobody Thinks About

Here’s something I love about the way we set this up. Because Holly thought she was walking into a photography session, even a “fake” one, she showed up prepared. Hair done. Makeup done. A beautiful outfit. And yes, nails done.

That matters more than people realize. Some surprise proposals result in gorgeous moments but the person being proposed to spends the rest of the night wishing they had dressed up a little for the occasion they will cherish a lifetime. Thanks to our planning, Holly didn’t have that problem. She looked and felt amazing. And it shows in every single photo.

That was Austin thinking ahead. And it made all the difference.

I Do This For Every Surprise Proposal

As a couples photographer and a surprise proposal photographer, I offer full planning services for exactly this kind of session. We work together ahead of time, sometimes weeks and months, to make sure every detail is locked in. The location. The cover story. The cues. The timing.

The Royal Gorge Bridge and Park and the surrounding Cañon City area are some of the most breathtaking proposal locations in the entire state. The canyon. The bridge. The scale of it all. It makes for photos that feel as big as the moment itself.

If you’re planning a surprise proposal in Colorado and you want someone who’s done this before, please reach out. Let’s build something Holly and Austin would be proud of.

She still doesn’t know how long we planned it.
