The Power of Texture and Layers

The Power of Texture and Layers

I have a secret I wish to share with seniors before their session goes on. What you put on matters just as much as which location you choose. I’ve had the privilege to work with seniors in Colorado Springs, Pueblo, and Cañon City. Garden of the Gods, Cheyenne Canyon, the Arkansas River we have beautiful settings for each. But I’ve seen great backdrops made to look dull by a flat, lifeless outfit which just doesn’t do the shot justice.

Also I’ve had simple settings come to life because a senior rocked the layering. So let’s discuss what to wear for senior photos. This is a detail which really makes a big difference. Layering is key here.

Colorado’s weather in the Springs is unpredictable. It can be 75 out and sunny at noon and by 3pm it drops. In the fall when most seniors are doing their shooting that isn’t just a matter of style. That is survival. And layers look incredible on camera.

A Denim jacket over a simple dress. Chunky knit cardigan with jeans and boots. Flannel tied at the waist. These aren’t just practical. They add dimension. They give the eye somewhere to go. That is what takes a good photo into great.

Why Texture is the Key

When I am coaching seniors in their choice of senior portrait outfits, I talk about texture first of all. As for flat and smooth fabrics — think basic t-shirts or thin polyester they don’t play with light in the same way. There’s nothing for the camera to work with.

But a chunky knit sweater? A worn leather jacket? Linen that moves? Those fabrics create tiny shadows and highlights all across the frame. It makes the whole image feel richer, professional and more expensive, even if the outfit itself wasn’t.

Texture is the secret ingredient most people don’t think about until I mention it.

The Magic of Movement

This one is for the ladies. If you are in the market for senior photo outfit ideas and you want that cinematic, editorial look bring along a flowy dress or skirt. In Southern Colorado, wind is a thing. It is an element that we embrace. When that wind picks up and it plays with a long dress just so, something happens in the photo. It goes from being a portrait to a still from a movie. The fabric moves, your hair moves, the whole image comes to life. You can’t achieve that with stiff clothing. It just doesn’t play the same.

A Few Quick Tips Before You Pack Your Bag

Keep at least two to three outfit choices. We can switch looks mid-session and keep things fresh. Choose colors that complement landscape, like earthy tones, warm neutrals, deep greens and burgundies all photograph beautifully here. And please avoid loud logos or busy patterns. They pull attention away from you.

You are the subject. The outfit is just the frame.
